xy Chair

a seed, carries the studio’s initial dream and marks the beginning

The “xy” furniture series was born from the first project of architectural firm Atelier xy — J.Boroski Bar. Like a seed, it carries the studio’s initial dream and marks the beginning of its development. To better integrate this design into diverse scenes and spaces, we have infused it with new vitality, carefully refining every detail, from the overall proportions to the smallest elements.

The dark gray-dyed wood frame stands like a steady silhouette, its rigid lines softened by the flexible rattan backrest, adding a sense of warmth and intimacy. The mustard yellow wool fabric cushion gently illuminates the design, like sunlight breaking through the clouds, breathing life into the piece.

The metal rods between the armrests and the rear legs are finished with a matte coating, secured by exposed screws. The balance between strength and softness is woven into the details, exuding a unique elegance without losing its sense of power.

It’s worth noting that this armchair features a distinctive detachable design, with all components capable of being flat-packed into a compact box, reducing both transportation costs and carbon emissions. Like a traveler’s bag, it brings ease and convenience to the movement of life and the shifting of spaces.

— DESIGNER —

Atelier xy

Atelier xy is an innovative design practice on architecture, interior, and products based in Shanghai, founded in 2018 by Qi Xiaofeng and Wang Yuyang. The commissions are mainly boutique items about restaurant, retailing, small working place and living space.

Atelier xy is based on the most widely used coordinate system in space. The x and y axes of the Cartesian coordinate system, which is the true logical origin of Atelier xy. We believe that the process of design is not only about creation, but also about the exploration and study of the space, the light, the choice of materials and all that is involved and even the people.
